Beyma 5CX200Fe: compact 5" coaxial with ferrite magnet, 150 W AES and 92 dB

Small coaxial drivers solve a space problem: where there is no room for a woofer plus tweeter, the Beyma 5CX200Fe fits both sections into one 5" frame. The cone with its 1" voice coil handles bass and midrange from 85 Hz, while the HF unit at the centre carries the response up to 20,000 Hz. 150 W AES power handling and 92 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω are solid figures for a driver of this size.

The ferrite magnet makes the 5CX200Fe, at 2.51 kg, the heavier model of the CX series. The Thiele-Small parameters show a balanced alignment: Fs 82 Hz, Qts 0.41 and Vas 5.3 l suit small enclosures, and an Xmax of 5.7 mm is a lot of excursion for a 5" coaxial, which in small boxes makes the difference between distortion and clean bass.

Use and enclosure

The EBP of 191 points clearly to bass reflex. As a guideline the parameters give about 6.2 l tuned to 77 Hz, with a lower cutoff around 74 Hz. That yields a satellite that fully covers speech and music above a subwoofer. If you use the driver as a midrange in a larger system, take a sealed midrange chamber of around 2.7 l; the corner frequency is then 141 Hz, which pairs well with a woofer below. The exact calculation with port dimensions comes from the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.

Applications: small installation speakers, nearfield monitors, centre and surround speakers in home cinema, and mid-high units in three-way designs where the coaxial's point source gives clean imaging. The crossover between cone and HF unit is set by your network.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω, Re 5.1 Ω, Le 0.25 mH: low inductance, straightforward crossover design.
  • Xmax 5.7 mm with Sd 95 cm²: plenty of excursion for the size, bass reflex makes use of it.
  • 2.51 kg: the ferrite magnet is heavier than neodymium, irrelevant for installations.
  • 150 W AES at 92 dB: small amplifiers are enough, thermal reserve is there.

Frequently asked questions

How does the 5CX200Fe compare to the FaitalPRO 5HX140?

The 5HX140 has a higher resonance at Fs 100 Hz and a smaller equivalent volume of 3.4 l, so it is meant for even smaller boxes. The 5CX200Fe goes lower with its 82 Hz resonance and allows a lower vented tuning at a similar Qts.

Is it suitable as a midrange?

Yes, in a sealed midrange chamber of about 2.7 l it works cleanly from around 141 Hz and, with its integrated HF unit, covers the complete range up to 20,000 Hz. That saves a separate tweeter and its crossover branch.

What amplifier power makes sense?

For nearfield and installation a few tens of watts are enough, since 92 dB already gives decent levels. Up to the 150 W AES rating at 8 Ω you have reserve, as long as the amplifier does not clip and a high-pass keeps the lowest frequencies away.

Beyma 5CX200Fe: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 5CX200Fe is a 5-inch coaxial driver with ferrite magnet from the CX series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 5CX200Fe with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
