Beyma 8WR300: 8" midrange with 95 dB, 28 g moving mass and BL 15.5 Tm

If you are after an 8" midrange with high efficiency, look at the numbers of the Beyma 8WR300: 95 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, a moving mass of only 28 g and a motor with BL 15.5 Tm. The WR series is designed for the midband; the transmission range of 65 Hz to 4000 Hz and the 2" voice coil rated at 300 W AES show the orientation toward 3-way systems and midrange horns in sound reinforcement.

The parameters match: Fs 65 Hz, Qts 0.27, Qes 0.29 and Vas 15 l. The EBP of 224 makes clear that the 8WR300 is not meant as a bass driver but as a midrange working above a woofer. Xmax 6 mm and 132 cm³ of displacement are plenty for midrange duty. A mounting depth of 95 mm and 3.3 kg allow tight midrange chambers and lightweight tops.

Use and enclosure

For 3-way use a sealed midrange chamber is the right choice; the guideline is 2.6 l with fc around 170 Hz. Set the lower crossover well above 65 Hz and the upper one below 4000 Hz, where a compression driver on a horn takes over. The horns and waveguides category at 42.audio shows which Beyma options come into question. A vented box is possible with a guideline of 5.3 l, fb 89 Hz and f3 around 106 Hz, but only makes sense when a subwoofer supplies the low end.

The low inductance of 0.9 mH and the flat impedance curve around Re 6 Ω make the 8WR300 straightforward for passive crossovers as well. At 300 W AES a mid-power amplifier is enough; in midrange duty with a clean lower crossover the power handling is rarely pushed anyway. To fine-tune the midrange chamber, use the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

What to look out for

  • 95 dB sensitivity: on par with compression drivers on horns in terms of level.
  • Transmission range up to 4000 Hz: plan the crossover to the tweeter below that.
  • Mms 28 g with BL 15.5 Tm: light cone, strong motor, Qts 0.27.
  • Mounting depth 95 mm, 3.3 kg: fits shallow midrange chambers.
  • Xmax 6 mm: run as a midrange with a high-pass well above 65 Hz.

Frequently asked questions

What separates the 8WR300 from the Beyma 8WRS300?

The parameters are practically identical: Fs 65 Hz, Qts 0.27 versus 0.28, Vas 15 l on both. The choice comes down to availability and detail differences in execution; for midrange duty in 3-way systems both are equally usable.

Can I use the 8WR300 in a vented 2-way top?

With limitations. The vented guideline of 5.3 l with f3 around 106 Hz delivers little lower midband, and the range ends at 4000 Hz. For a top with a subwoofer and a low crossover to the horn it works; without a subwoofer the bass is missing.

How does the 8WR300 compare with the 18 Sound 8NW650?

The 8NW650 has a very similar parameter set with Fs 63 Hz, Qts 0.25 and Vas 17.8 l. The 8WR300 focuses on high efficiency with 95 dB and low moving mass; both are midrange drivers that want to work in a sealed chamber.

Beyma 8WR300: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 8WR300 is a 8-inch woofer from the WR series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 8WR300 with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
