18Sound 10M600: 10" ferrite midrange with 3" coil, 102 dB and 400 W AES

A 10" midrange with ferrite magnet, 3" voice coil and 400 W AES – the 18Sound 10M600 from the M series is built for the midband of large three-way systems, where a 12" or 18" woofer covers the low mids and a driver above it fills the range up to the compression driver with high efficiency. 102 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω puts it on the level of horn systems without needing a horn itself.

The Thiele-Small parameters show its character: Fs 70 Hz, Qts 0.23, Vas 25.6 l, BL 17.6 Tm with only 32 g moving mass. This is a heavily damped, powerful motor with an EBP of 280 – a figure that clearly points to bass-reflex or horn operation and against deep bass in a sealed box. Xmax is 4 mm, enough for low mids from about 80 Hz with a suitable high-pass, but not for bass duty. The usable range extends to 5,200 Hz, so the handover to a 1" or 2" compression driver can be chosen freely according to the horn.

Use and enclosure

As a guideline for a bass-reflex enclosure you get roughly 5.7 l tuned to 110 Hz, giving a lower cutoff around 142 Hz; sealed it is about 3.0 l with a corner frequency of 215 Hz. Both are approximations from the TS parameters – fine-tune with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio. In practice this means: a small sealed midrange chamber is the uncomplicated choice when the transition to the bass sits at around 215 Hz or above; if you want to cross lower and use the low mids from 80 Hz, take the small reflex chamber and cross with a steep high-pass above the tuning frequency.

Upwards the 10M600 is specified to 5,200 Hz. Because of the 1.28 mH inductance the impedance does not stay flat but rises in the upper mids – plan a Zobel network in passive crossovers or cross actively. With 3" coil and 400 W AES it handles the dynamics of professional sound reinforcement; 7.35 kg and 126 mm mounting depth need to be planned into the cabinet.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω, 102 dB: very loud, in three-way systems usually needs attenuation relative to the bass.
  • Fs 70 Hz, Qts 0.23, EBP 280: bass-reflex or sealed midrange chamber, no deep bass.
  • Xmax 4 mm: high-pass mandatory, low mids from 80 Hz only with steep filtering.
  • Le 1.28 mH: impedance rise in the upper mids, compensate in passive crossovers.
  • 7.35 kg and 126 mm mounting depth: ferrite magnet, correspondingly heavy.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I cross the 10M600 at the bottom and top?

At the bottom well above 80 Hz; in a sealed chamber of about 3 l the corner frequency is 215 Hz, a sensible anchor for the high-pass. At the top there is room up to 5,200 Hz; set the crossover to the tweeter below that, depending on horn and driver.

How does the 10M600 differ from the 10NDA610?

The 10NDA610 uses neodymium, weighs less, is designed with Fs 89 Hz and Vas 18 l as a pure midrange without low-mid ambitions and is 1 dB more sensitive. The 10M600 goes lower with Fs 70 Hz and 4 mm Xmax and is the ferrite alternative when weight does not matter.

Which amplifier fits?

A channel with 400 W into 8 Ω uses the full power handling; in the midband less is often enough, because music carries less energy there than in the bass. More important is a limiter or an active crossover that sets the high-pass cleanly.
