18Sound 10NW750: 10" neodymium woofer with 3" coil, 450 W AES and 7.5 mm Xmax
The 18Sound 10NW750 is the stronger sibling in the NW series: 3" voice coil instead of 2.5", 450 W AES power handling and Xmax of 7.5 mm. 18Sound classifies it as a woofer/midrange with emphasis on the low end, and the parameters agree: Fs 53 Hz, Qts 0.31 and Vas 34 l describe a driver that delivers proper extension in a vented box and still runs cleanly up to 5,000 Hz.
Sensitivity of 94 dB is below that of lighter 10" drivers, the reason being the 45 g moving mass and a suspension designed for excursion. In return you get a motor with BL of 16.4 Tm that controls the cone, and a 3" coil that handles 450 W AES without heavy compression. Le of 0.6 mH is low and gives a flat impedance curve through the midrange. At 3.8 kg the driver stays light enough for mobile use thanks to neodymium.
Use and enclosure
In a 2-way top a vented box is the right format: guide value 18 l with fb 64 Hz and f3 71 Hz. The range starts at 50 Hz, already useful for a 10" driver without a subwoofer; with a sub you cross above that and use the 7.5 mm of excursion for level in the kick-bass band. The EBP of 166 shows that a sealed box gives less extension; the guide value of 8.1 l at fc 121 Hz suits a midrange chamber in a 3-way build.
The upper limit of 5,000 Hz leaves room for the handover to a 1" or 1.4" compression driver on a horn from the 18Sound range. Compared with the 18Sound 10W500, also at 42.audio, the 10NW750 shares the same Fs of 53 Hz and a similar Qts of 0.31 versus 0.29, so the enclosure requirements are alike, but it adds the larger 3" coil, more excursion and the lighter neodymium motor. The B&C 10NDL64 with Fs 58 Hz, Qts 0.3 and Vas 34.5 l is in the driver database for direct comparison.
What to look out for
- 3" voice coil, 450 W AES: high continuous power handling for a 10" driver.
- Xmax 7.5 mm: high-pass above 50 Hz keeps excursion available for high levels.
- Neodymium, 3.8 kg: light for mobile tops and monitors.
- 8 Ω, Re 5.8 Ω: easy load, two in parallel at 4 Ω.
- Mounting depth 130 mm: compact cabinets are possible.
Frequently asked questions
Can the 10NW750 work without a subwoofer?
In a vented box of about 18 l tuned to 64 Hz it reaches a guide f3 of around 71 Hz. That is enough for speech, acoustic music and smaller events; for bass-heavy music a subwoofer belongs in the system.
What separates the 10NW750 from the 18Sound 10W500?
Both have Fs 53 Hz and a similar Qts; the ferrite 10W500 is heavier and carries a 2" coil rated at 280 W AES. The 10NW750 offers a 3" coil, 450 W AES, more excursion and 3.8 kg.
Which amplifier suits the 10NW750?
A channel with a few hundred watts into 8 Ω makes good use of the 450 W AES. At 94 dB you need more power than with very high-efficiency 10" drivers, but the level stays stable under continuous load.
At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 10NW750 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
