18Sound 10W500: 10" ferrite mid-woofer with 98 dB and 280 W AES

98 dB sensitivity from a 10" driver with a ferrite magnet and a 2" voice coil: the 18Sound 10W500 from the W series is built for efficiency. A light cone with only 33 g of moving mass and a motor with BL of 14.6 Tm make it a woofer/midrange that produces a lot of level from little amplifier power. The 280 W AES rating is down to the 2" coil, and at 98 dB it is enough for most tops and monitors.

The parameters are classic vented-box material: Fs 53 Hz, Qts 0.29 and Vas 45.2 l. The relatively high compliance brings extension, the well damped motor keeps control. The frequency range runs from 55 to 4,500 Hz, Xmax is 5.5 mm. At 4.7 kg the driver is not heavy for ferrite, and the mounting depth of 121 mm stays moderate. Use and enclosure

The vented guide value is 19 l with fb 68 Hz and f3 78 Hz. At that size the 10W500 is a good candidate for compact 2-way tops and stage monitors that have to run without a subwoofer. The crossover to the tweeter can sit high thanks to the 4,500 Hz upper limit and the low inductance of 0.72 mH; a 1" compression driver on a horn from the 18Sound range is the typical partner. The EBP of 171 shows that a sealed box of 9.1 l at fc 129 Hz only makes sense as a midrange chamber.

With Xmax of 5.5 mm, excursion is the limiting factor at very high bass levels, so set the high-pass above 55 Hz when running with a subwoofer. Comparable in parameters are the B&C 10PS26 with Fs 54 Hz, Qts 0.29 and Vas 38 l and the FaitalPRO 10PR320 with Fs 48 Hz, Qts 0.29 and Vas 52.7 l; the neodymium 18Sound 10NW650 is the lighter alternative from the same manufacturer. Is the 10W500 suitable for a stage monitor?

Yes, 98 dB sensitivity and a compact vented box of about 19 l as a guide value are ideal for monitors. The crossover to the horn can be placed flexibly thanks to the 4,500 Hz upper limit.

How much power does the 10W500 need?

Little. At 98 dB an amplifier well below 280 W into 8 Ω already delivers high levels. The 2" coil does not tolerate sustained overload, so use a limiter and a high-pass.

10W500 or 10NW650, which fits better?

The 10W500 has more efficiency at 98 dB and a ferrite magnet at 4.7 kg. The neodymium 10NW650 weighs less, has similar parameters with Fs 51 Hz and Qts 0.28, and is the lighter choice for mobile tops.
