18Sound 10W650: 10" mid-woofer with Qts 0.48 for larger vented boxes

Among the 18Sound 10" drivers the 10W650 is the one with the highest Qts: 0.48 at Fs 67 Hz and Vas 26 l. That is not a flaw but a different design goal. A higher Qts means less electrical damping, more level around resonance and behaviour that stays benign in larger vented boxes and in open designs. The W series relies on ferrite magnets, here with a 2.5" voice coil and 250 W AES.

With 96 dB sensitivity and a moving mass of 36.6 g the 10W650 remains usable up to 5,700 Hz, a high upper limit for a 10" driver. Le of 0.59 mH confirms the low inductance that keeps the midrange clean. Xmax 5.7 mm and BL of 12.4 Tm are moderate figures; the driver is aimed at even reproduction in full-range tops rather than maximum kick-bass impact.

Use and enclosure

The vented guide value is unusually large at 47 l with fb 54 Hz and f3 49 Hz, a consequence of the high Qts. In that volume the 10W650 reaches a low-frequency cut-off that other 10" drivers do not offer, with the nominal range starting at 55 Hz. Build a smaller box and you get a hump above the tuning frequency, which can actually be welcome in monitors used at close range. The EBP of 131 also allows a sealed box: guide value 22 l at fc 99 Hz for midrange chambers or compact closed cabinets.

The upper limit of 5,700 Hz makes the handover to a 1" compression driver on a horn from the 18Sound range straightforward. Similarly aligned are the FaitalPRO 10PR300 with Fs 65 Hz, Qts 0.48 and Vas 30.6 l and the 18Sound 10NTLW3500 with Fs 64 Hz, Qts 0.45 and Vas 18.1 l, although the latter plays in a different power class with 800 W AES and neodymium. Both are in the driver database at 42.audio for comparison.

What to look out for

  • Qts 0.48: large vented box with 47 l as guide value, smaller works with a hump.
  • 250 W AES via 2.5" coil: for tops and monitors, not for sustained high power.
  • Mounting depth 121 mm, 4.3 kg: compact and light for ferrite.
  • 8 Ω, Re 5.1 Ω: standard load for any amplifier.
  • Xmax 5.7 mm: high-pass above 55 Hz at high levels.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the 10W650 need such a large box?

The high Qts of 0.48 means little electrical damping. The calculation gives a guide value of 47 l at fb 54 Hz for a flat alignment. Smaller boxes work but produce a hump in the upper bass.

Is the 10W650 suitable for a full-range monitor without a subwoofer?

Yes, with f3 around 49 Hz in the 47 l guide volume and a range up to 5,700 Hz it covers a wide spectrum together with a 1" compression driver. 96 dB sensitivity keeps the power requirement low.

How does the 10W650 differ from the 10NTLW3500?

Both have a similar Qts of 0.45 to 0.48, but the 10NTLW3500 has neodymium, a 2x3.5" coil rated at 800 W AES and Vas 18.1 l. The 10W650 is the lighter, more affordable ferrite variant with 250 W AES for moderate levels.

At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 10W650 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
