18Sound 12NLW9410: high-performance woofer with 1,000 W AES and 11 mm Xmax
The 18Sound 12NLW9410 is the powerhouse among the 12" drivers in this series: 1,000 W AES through a 4" voice coil, 11 mm Xmax and a 21.7 Tm motor. The neodymium woofer is classed as a high-performance woofer rather than a woofer/midrange – a driver that stays clean in the bass at high levels.
The parameters fit the picture: Fs 42 Hz, Qts 0.26, Vas 55 l and a moving mass of 105 g – heavier than the efficiency-oriented models, but with more excursion and power handling. The 95 dB sensitivity is the price for the extra cone mass, one you gladly pay with a 1,000 W rating. The frequency range runs from 45 to 3,000 Hz, and the driver weighs 7.3 kg.
Use and enclosure
With an EBP of 156 bass reflex is the logical choice. The guideline is 17 l net tuned to 59 Hz with an f3 around 72 Hz – a compact enclosure that allows very high levels with 1,000 W and 11 mm Xmax. That is exactly the recipe for a small, loud top or a bandpass design. Sealed, you get 8.6 l with a 114 Hz system resonance. Use the enclosure calculator on 42.audio for the precise alignment.
The 3,000 Hz upper limit and the 1.07 mH inductance suggest a crossover to the tweeter in the lower midrange, ideally active. A 1.4" compression driver with a horn from the 18Sound range is a good match. An amplifier that actually uses the power rating matters here, otherwise potential is left on the table.
What to look out for
- 1,000 W AES into 8 Ω, Re 4.5 Ω – plan a correspondingly powerful amplifier.
- 11 mm Xmax and Mms 105 g: built for high bass output.
- 95 dB sensitivity – less than the WM models, more power handling in return.
- Mounting depth 143 mm, weight 7.3 kg.
- Bass-reflex guideline 17 l tuned to 59 Hz.
Frequently asked questions
How does the 12NLW9410 stack up against the Beyma 12P1000Nd?
Both sit at Qts 0.26 with similar resonance (42 versus 47 Hz). The Beyma has a slightly smaller Vas of 49 l compared with 55 l for the 18Sound. For the decision, a direct parameter comparison in the driver database on 42.audio is worthwhile.
Why only 95 dB at 1,000 W?
The 105 g cone mass and the long voice coil needed for 11 mm Xmax cost efficiency. In return the driver converts the high power into excursion without compressing early. With the same amplifier it delivers more clean bass output than a lighter driver with less Xmax.
Is the 12NLW9410 suitable as a subwoofer?
As a compact bass cabinet down to the f3 around 72 Hz in 17 l bass reflex, yes; for genuine deep bass a 12" driver with 55 l Vas is not the first choice. As the woofer in a loud 2-way top with a low crossover it plays to its strengths.
