18Sound 15NW530: 15" neodymium woofer with 3" voice coil for vented tops

The 15NW530 is the all-rounder among 18Sound's 15" neodymium woofers. With a 3" voice coil, 500 W AES, 96 dB sensitivity and a stated range of 47 Hz to 3500 Hz it covers the typical needs of a 15" top or a compact full-range box. The 4.4 kg weight and 169 mm mounting depth make it attractive for portable cabinets.

The parameters are balanced: Fs 43 Hz, Qts 0.33, Qes 0.35, Vas 154 l, BL 22 Tm on 135 g of moving mass. The 1.4 mH inductance is normal for a 3" coil and sensibly limits the usable range at the top to the stated 3500 Hz. Linear excursion is 7.5 mm.

Use and enclosure

EBP 123 points to a vented box. The guide value from the TSP is around 96 l net, tuned to 49 Hz with an f3 near 53 Hz – an alignment that gives a 15" top decent extension without necessarily needing a subwoofer. Sealed would be about 43 l with fc 92 Hz, useful only as a mid chamber in a larger system. Port length and fine-tuning are calculated with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

In a 2-way box with a compression driver and horn the crossover sits well below the 3500 Hz upper limit. Matching horns are in the 18Sound horns & waveguides category; the throat size follows the driver you choose.

Frequently asked questions

How does the 15NW530 compare with the Beyma 15LEX1600Fe?

Both have Qts 0.33, but the Beyma has Fs 38 Hz and a much smaller Vas of 106 l, plus a ferrite magnet. The 15NW530 is lighter and, due to 154 l Vas, needs a larger box for the same tuning. Both are available in the shop.

Is 500 W power handling enough for PA?

For a top with 96 dB sensitivity, yes: an amplifier around 500 W into 8 Ω reaches high levels. With very low tuning keep an eye on the 7.5 mm excursion and add a high-pass below fb.

Is the 15NW530 also suitable for bass guitar?

The 47 Hz to 3500 Hz range and 96 dB suit a bass cabinet well. In a vented box around 96 l you get extension down to about 53 Hz, which is practical for electric bass.
