18Sound 18LW2400: 18" ferrite bass with 1,200 W AES, 98 dB and only 1.35 mH inductance
An 18" woofer that hits hard in the bass yet stays clean into the upper bass: that is the 18Sound 18LW2400 from the LW series. Ferrite magnet, 4" voice coil, 1,200 W AES and 98 dB sensitivity are on the plus side, along with a BL of 25.6 Tm that keeps the 192 g cone firmly under control. The low inductance of 1.35 mH stands out, unusual for a 4" coil and the reason the stated bandwidth up to 2,500 Hz is credible at all.
The parameters: Fs 35 Hz, Qts 0.31, Vas 230 l, Xmax 9.5 mm. That places the 18LW2400 between the tighter LW models and the softer-suspended 18LW2420. The 42.audio database lists the FaitalPRO 18HP1010 and the FaitalPRO 18XL1600 as neighbours, both at Qts 0.31; in-house the 18NLW9000 is the neodymium counterpart with identical Qts and a similar Vas of 206 l. If you want a versatile PA bass for subwoofers and two-way full-range boxes without moving to neodymium, this is the one.
Use and enclosure
An EBP of 109 leans towards bass reflex, and the guideline from the Thiele-Small parameters is about 120 l net volume, tuned to 42 Hz, f3 around 47 Hz. That is a classic live-sound sub that reaches deep enough without DSP boost. Sealed, the guideline would be 55 l at a resonance of 80 Hz, which only makes sense for kick-bass applications. Work out the exact design including port dimensions with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
As the bass in a two-way full-range box the driver benefits from its low inductance: the crossover to a compression driver on a horn can sensibly sit anywhere from a few hundred hertz to just above 1 kHz, well below the nominal limit of 2,500 Hz. For full-range use the more compact vented volume is the natural choice, which you weigh against extension using the calculator.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω nominal, Re 5 Ω: suits amplifier channels around 1,200 W into 8 Ω, two in parallel at 4 Ω possible.
- Le 1.35 mH: very low for a 4" coil, good for full-range use into the upper bass.
- Xmax 9.5 mm: protect with a high-pass when tuned to 42 Hz.
- Mounting depth 214 mm, weight 12.75 kg: ferrite, so plan a suitably rigid baffle.
Frequently asked questions
18LW2400 or 18LW2420, which fits better?
With Qts 0.31 and Vas 230 l the 18LW2400 has the tighter motor and more efficiency in the upper bass. The 18LW2420 is more compliant and built with more excursion for lower tunings, but wants a larger box. For full-range boxes lean towards the 18LW2400, for pure subs towards the 18LW2420.
Which enclosure is a sensible guideline?
Bass reflex around 120 l tuned to 42 Hz with f3 near 47 Hz. Sealed at 55 l with an 80 Hz resonance only for kick bass. Exact port dimensions and alternatives come from the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.
How much amplifier power does the 18LW2400 need?
The AES rating of 1,200 W into 8 Ω sets the ceiling for continuous use. With 98 dB sensitivity the driver reaches high levels with considerably less. A limiter and a high-pass below the tuning frequency matter more than wattage.
At 42.audio you get the 18SOUND 18LW2400 with datasheet PDF, all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas 18Sound.
