18Sound 18NTLW5000: 18" neodymium subwoofer with 17.5 mm Xmax and 95 dB
An 18" driver that works both ways: the 18NTLW5000 from 18Sound's NTLW series combines 95 dB sensitivity with 17.5 mm of linear excursion. 18Sound calls it a super-performance woofer, meaning a neodymium driver with a dual-gap motor and two 4.5" voice coils that handles 1800 W and still weighs a manageable 12 kg. Nominal impedance is 8 Ω, Re is 5.5 Ω.
The Thiele-Small parameters describe a classic reflex subwoofer: fs 32 Hz, Qts 0.32, Vas 176 l and a force factor of 31.3 Tm. With 0.295 kg of moving mass the cone is comparatively light for a long-throw driver, which explains the high efficiency. The dual-gap motor, with two air gaps and two voice coils, keeps the BL curve more uniform across the stroke than a simple overhung motor and dissipates heat through two paths – important when the full 1800 W is actually applied.
Use and enclosure
An EBP of 97 allows both vented and sealed designs. As a guideline, the bass reflex alignment gives about 100 l tuned to 37 Hz with a lower cut-off around 41 Hz – a manageable volume for an 18" touring sub. Sealed would be roughly 45 l with fc at 71 Hz, which only makes sense with active equalisation. Use the enclosure calculator at 42.audio for an exact simulation; the TSP are also in the driver database.
The working range starts at 30 Hz and extends to 1800 Hz. As a subwoofer you cross over far below that, but in a 2-way full-range cabinet it can also run up into the lower midrange. The 310 mm mounting depth belongs in the cabinet plan, as does the neodymium magnet, which means less mass in the box with the same motor strength.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω with Re 5.5 Ω – an easy load for practically any PA amplifier, even two in parallel
- Xmax 17.5 mm at 0.295 kg Mms: plenty of stroke without losing efficiency
- Mounting depth 310 mm, weight 12 kg thanks to neodymium
- Dual-gap motor with two 4.5" voice coils rated at 1800 W
Frequently asked questions
Can the 18NTLW5000 be used in a bass reflex full-range cabinet?
Yes, the response extends to 1800 Hz and Qts 0.32 suits a vented box. At 95 dB it keeps pace with compression drivers in the bass, provided the crossover sits sensibly above the lower limit.
How does it differ from the 18Sound 18LW1400?
The 18LW1400 has almost identical parameters with fs 33 Hz and Qts 0.32, but 210 l Vas against 176 l. The NTLW5000 therefore gets by with a slightly smaller box and uses neodymium instead of ferrite, saving weight.
Which amplifier makes sense?
An amplifier in the region of the 1800 W rating at 8 Ω, with a limiter and a high-pass below 30 Hz. For dual-18 cabinets, parallel operation at 4 Ω is the obvious option.

Enclosure suggestion
The EBP of 97 is in the intermediate range — either works; sealed plays tighter, bass reflex deeper and louder. EBP = fs / Qes = 32 / 0.33
Sealed (Qtc 0.707)
- Enclosure volume Vb
- 45.3 l
- System resonance Fc
- 71 Hz
- Cut-off frequency F3
- 71 Hz
Bass reflex (QB3 after Small)
- Enclosure volume Vb
- 81.9 l
- Tuning frequency Fb
- 41 Hz
- Cut-off frequency F3
- 45 Hz
Vb is the required net internal volume, Fb the tuning frequency of the reflex port and F3 the frequency at which the level has dropped by 3 dB. Calculated approximation after Small. A starting point for simulation, not a finished build plan.
