Beyma 12WRS400: 12" woofer with 400 W AES, 97 dB and Qts 0.29 for vented boxes

The Beyma 12WRS400 is the WRS variant of the 12" all-rounder from the WR family: 400 W AES power handling, 97 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω, a 3" voice coil and a frequency range from 45 to 5,000 Hz. It is intended for full-range tops, monitor wedges and vented boxes in which a single 12" driver covers everything from bass up to the hand-over to the tweeter.

Compared with its sibling, the 12WR400, it differs in motor details: BL 17.4 Tm, Le 1.3 mH, Qms 7.7 and a Qts of 0.29 instead of 0.27. Fs 42 Hz, Vas 91 l, Mms 63 g and Xmax 6.3 mm are identical. The slightly higher Qts moves the driver a step towards a larger box with lower tuning, which is more of an advantage for applications without a subwoofer. The EBP of 135 stays clearly in vented territory.

Use and enclosure

The approximation gives a vented box of 39 l as a guide value, tuned to 54 Hz, with a lower cut-off of 62 Hz. With that the 12WRS400 plays deeper than the compact 12" top format suggests and carries small gigs even without a subwoofer. If you run the driver above a sub you can shrink the volume and then high-pass it. A sealed box of 18 l with fc 102 Hz is the satellite option. Run the alignment through the enclosure calculator on 42.audio before you cut wood.

The range up to 5,000 Hz allows a relaxed crossover to the tweeter well below the upper limit. A 1" compression driver with a horn from the Beyma range is the natural partner, depending on the coverage you want.

What to look out for

  • Impedance 8 Ω, Re 5.6 Ω – uncritical for common PA amplifiers.
  • Mounting depth 132 mm, weight 5.5 kg: shallow enough for wedges and slim tops.
  • Qts 0.29 and Vas 91 l: needs a bit more volume than stiffer-suspended 12" drivers.
  • Xmax 6.3 mm – high-pass below fb in bass duty, otherwise it bottoms at full tilt.
  • 3" voice coil, 400 W AES: thermally sized for top duty, not for continuous sub loads.

Frequently asked questions

12WR400 or 12WRS400 – which one should I choose?

Both share Fs 42 Hz, Vas 91 l, Xmax 6.3 mm and the 3" coil. With Qts 0.29 versus 0.27 the 12WRS400 has the slightly softer motor and therefore a slightly larger box guide value; for a cabinet without a subwoofer that is rather welcome. In a sub/top system both are equivalent.

Which enclosure suits the 12WRS400?

Vented with around 39 l net volume and tuning near 54 Hz is the guide value from the parameters. A sealed box of 18 l only works as a satellite, because the cut-off then sits at about 102 Hz.

How does the 12WRS400 compare with the 18 Sound 12LW1400?

The 12LW1400 sits close to the Beyma with Fs 45 Hz and Qts 0.3, but with 55 l its Vas is considerably smaller, so it gets by with less box. The 12WRS400 rewards the larger volume with a little more extension at the same tuning.

Beyma 12WRS400: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 12WRS400 is a 12-inch woofer from the WRS series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 12WRS400 with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
