Beyma 18LEX1200Nd: 9 kg lightweight 18" woofer with BL 26.4 Tm and 1200 W AES

Strong motor, low weight: the Beyma 18LEX1200Nd combines a neodymium magnet with a 4" voice coil and reaches BL 26.4 Tm at 9 kg total weight. The 18" woofer from the LEX series handles 1200 W AES, has 98 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and covers 40 to 1000 Hz.

Compared with softer-suspended subwoofer drivers it is tuned tighter: fs 36 Hz, Qts 0.33 and Vas 219 l. The low Qes of 0.35 with 200 g of moving mass shows how firmly the motor controls the cone. With 11 mm Xmax there is still enough excursion for solid deep-bass output, and the Qms of 10.9 indicates a mechanically low-loss suspension.

Use and enclosure

With EBP 103 the 18LEX1200Nd belongs in a vented enclosure. The guideline is 136 l tuned to 41 Hz with an f3 around 44 Hz – a manageable volume for an 18" that suits sub-tops and compact vented subs on stage. Sealed, 61 l with fc at 77 Hz results, which leaves little extension without equalisation and only makes sense with DSP boost. Mounting depth is 225 mm.

The combination of 9 kg and a 136 l guideline volume makes the driver attractive for touring subs where weight and packing size count. As a subwoofer, cross it far below 1000 Hz; the inductance of 1.7 mH then plays no role. A high-pass below the tuning frequency protects the 11 mm Xmax at full power. Does the 18LEX1200Nd work in a sealed enclosure?

The guideline is 61 l with fc at 77 Hz. For a subwoofer that is too little extension without equalisation; with DSP boost it works, but costs excursion and power. The 11 mm Xmax sets the limit there.

Which power amplifier suits the 18LEX1200Nd?
