18Sound 10NCX750: 10" coaxial driver with 97.5 dB, 350 W AES and 80° dispersion
A coaxial driver puts the high-frequency unit on the axis of the woofer and turns two ways into a point source: equal path length to the listener, no vertical offset, no interference lobe in the crossover region. The 18Sound 10NCX750 from the NCX series combines a 10" woofer with a 3" voice coil and a compression driver with a 2.4" voice coil and titanium diaphragm, which works through a conical horn with 80° dispersion in the centre of the woofer. The motor is neodymium; the complete driver weighs 4.25 kg at 148 mm mounting depth.
The figures show the professional design: 350 W AES power handling, 97.5 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω nominal impedance. The woofer section comes with Fs 64 Hz, Qts 0.25 and Vas 23 l – a very strong motor (BL 20 Tm) and a light cone (Mms 46 g) – and with 5.5 mm Xmax it has enough travel for operation from 60 Hz upwards. The low total Q is typical of a driver built for bass reflex and horn loading: control and efficiency rather than extension in sealed volumes.
Use and enclosure
Classic applications are compact two-way tops, stage monitors and installation loudspeakers, where the point source keeps the sound consistent across the whole coverage area – decisive for wedges, where the musician moves around. Bass reflex is the obvious cabinet: the EBP of 246 is far above 100, and in a sealed box little of the low end survives. As a guide from the Thiele-Small parameters you get around 6.5 l net tuned to 94 Hz with an f3 near 116 Hz – a very compact box for a top above a subwoofer. The exact design is a job for the enclosure calculator at 42.audio. Sealed, roughly 3.3 l at fc 181 Hz is a reference point, sensible only if the driver is to work purely as a mid-high unit above a sub.
18Sound sets the crossover between woofer and HF section at 1.2 kHz. Below that the horn no longer loads the driver adequately, above it the 10" cone already starts to beam – 1.2 kHz is therefore the point where the dispersion of both ways fits best. With DSP and delay alignment the combination is quickly made clean.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω and 350 W AES: size the amplifier accordingly, active or passive crossover
- Recommended crossover 1.2 kHz between 10" woofer and HF horn
- Neodymium motor, 4.25 kg, mounting depth 148 mm
- Qts 0.25 and EBP 246: bass reflex or horn, not sealed for low end
- Xmax 5.5 mm – intended as a top above a subwoofer, not full-range bass
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference to the 18Sound 10NCX750H?
Woofer and driver are practically the same, but the 10NCX750H has an asymmetric horn with different horizontal and vertical coverage, whereas the 10NCX750 radiates conically at 80° all round. The Thiele-Small parameters are close, the H version showing fs 65 Hz and Vas 21.7 l.
Which amplifier suits the 10NCX750?
At 8 Ω and 350 W AES, a power amp in that class per channel makes sense. Crossed actively, the HF section needs far less power than the woofer; with 97.5 dB sensitivity the driver reaches high levels even with smaller amplifiers.
Is the driver suitable as a studio monitor?
Yes, the point source and even dispersion help in monitoring situations. Plan on a bass reflex box around 6.5 l as a guide with a subwoofer below, because the driver is built for level and control rather than deep extension.
